white kitchen in renovated bungalow

Bungalow remodel in Mt Eden, Auckland

Qualitas Builders transformed an old Auckland bungalow into a stunning refurbished home

Our client's plan was to take their traditional style bungalow with lots of dark, separate rooms and create large, light-filled, spacious living spaces to suit their love of entertaining.

They also wanted to create a luxurious main bedroom with an ensuite and to modernise the main bathroom. This renovation connected their new living spaces with their outdoor pool area, while bringing that up to current safety requirements. A pool-side guest room and ensuite was added by converting an existing laundry and bathroom.

The new kitchen and dining room creates a modern layout

The expansive new kitchen has Quantum Quartz benchtops and matching splashbacks. The kitchen island features a waterfall benchtop, and has become a favourite spot for visitors to perch and enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

New timber bifold doors connect the kitchen and dining area to the outdoor entertaining area and pool, allowing ample sunlight to flood the once dark space.

Large stacker doors connect the kitchen to the covered outdoor living area

New aluminium joinery was installed in the main entry and the kitchen, connecting their lovely new spaces to the covered outdoor living area. The large stacker doors can be stacked back to either side of the frame, providing the ultimate flexibility and flow.

New kauri flooring was laid to match in with the existing flooring

It was stained a rich, dark walnut colour before final sealing (below). This creates a stunning contrast with the white cabinetry and tall ceilings, which have been matched with the existing decorative ceilings and scotias to maintain the character and flow of the house.

Hidden laundry in the kitchen

To retain laundry facilities without compromising on space, a compact laundry was seamlessly integrated into the kitchen design.

Concealed behind matching bi-fold cabinetry, the hidden laundry includes everything needed for daily living—washer, dryer, and built-in storage—while maintaining a clean, streamlined aesthetic. The cabinetry blends effortlessly with the rest of the kitchen, allowing the space to feel cohesive and uncluttered. It’s a smart solution that proves you don’t need a dedicated room to enjoy a fully functional laundry.

Poolside guest bedroom and ensuite renovation

What was once a dated main bathroom and separate laundry has been completely reimagined to create a beautifully appointed guest suite. By removing internal walls and reconfiguring the layout, we transformed the space into a light-filled guest bedroom complete with a private ensuite.

Custom timber joinery brings warmth and character to the room, with classic French doors that open directly onto the pool area, creating seamless indoor-outdoor flow perfect for entertaining or relaxing. The result is a smart, space-efficient redesign that adds value and lifestyle appeal to the home.

The main bathroom was also remodelled for a luxury look

The main bathroom has had a total refresh with a new tiled shower and full height tiles throughout. The St Michel London vanity fits the era of the home beautifully and has been replicated in the master ensuite.

Main bedroom with new ensuite and fitted wardrobe

Refurbished main bedroom, ensuite and walk-in wardrobe

The main bedroom has been beautifully refurbished to reflect the character of the home while introducing refined modern comforts. A new timber-framed window with custom leadlight detailing was designed to match the original windows throughout the house, ensuring a seamless blend of old and new. This careful attention to heritage detail enhances the room’s charm while allowing natural light to pour in.

In the adjoining ensuite, full-height wall tiles and a tiled walk-in shower elevate the space to a light, elegant retreat. Clean lines, timeless materials, and thoughtful design create a luxurious, spa-like experience without losing the classic character of the home.

A generous walk-in wardrobe completes the transformation, offering functional, well-appointed storage with a bespoke feel.

Testimonial

We couldn't be happier with our new home!

It has loads of light and we find the outdoor area and living spaces are fantastic for entertaining our family and friends. I love the feeling that things have been done to a really high standard and it feels like a quality home. Especially the lovely bathrooms and kitchen.

The collaboration between us and Qualitas was amazing. We were able to talk through everything and ask questions – no matter how small or silly they seemed. The team were right onto it and made sure that we understood exactly what was happening. Amanda’s behind the scenes advice about what works and doesn’t work with cabinets and joinery was really helpful and Bryce always had a great idea to share. Our renovation started a few weeks before the first Covid lockdown, so unfortunately progress was stop-start. Bryce and his team were brilliant at making sure we always had temporary facilities and the house was as liveable as they could make it.
